Summer Program Finale

Note: I apologize for the lack of photos with this post, but am having technical difficulty with the photo uploader. I will let everybody know when the rest of the summer program photos are loaded up!

The DeSoto Public Library’s 2012 Summer Program ended August 15th with a great program and lots of awards and prizes.

Paul Kinzer brought his mobile starlab and entertained the crowds with information about the cosmos in our beautiful portion of the Earth.

The 3rd-6th graders, who’ve been working the second half of the summer to build their “Time Machines” (inspired by our time-travel themed discussions and reading of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle) brought their finished products for judging. We had so many wonderful entries and it was difficult to choose, but the winners were: 1st place=Stephen P. 2nd place=Vin B. 3rd place=Ellie G. Look for photos on the “Summer Program” page.

Our overall reader’s prizes for points accumulated went to: 1st place=Lily B. 2nd place=Taylor D. and 3rd place=Jaycee Rae S They were presented with Olympic-style gold, silver and bronze medals for their achievements. Points were accumulated throughout the summer by logging minutes read, attending summer program activities, checking out books and visiting the library on non-program days.  Everybody got a prize for participation this summer but we like to really celebrate the big reading achievements too!

Overall, 40 area kids participated in this year’s summer program. We had 9 weekly programs and 23 of those 40 kids attended at least 7 of the 9 programs.

Although the final tally isn’t complete until we hear from the remaining kids who could not attend today’s session, to date the group logged 23,495 minutes of reading this summer! That’s a big jump over last year’s numbers!

So it is with sadness (and a sigh of exhaustion?) that we say farewell to the 2012 Summer Reading Program here in De Soto.  Plans for next year’s program will be starting up at first of the year; if you’d like to volunteer in any capacity, let us know!

Much thanks to our planning committee: Joann, Michelle & Dawn, and an extra huge THANK YOU to Jack & Ramona LaHaie from J&R Military Surplus, for bringing their huge shade tent to the DPL parking lot for the program days. We would have roasted (quite literally) without you!

Be sure to check out the photos of this summer’s events here!
