Library Summer Program in Full Swing, err…Shot?

creepycarrotsThe third week of our summer program brought us “Underground Eats” in the form of carrots, potatoes and, most importantly, Potato Chips!! To celebrate everybody’s favorite spud, we played with Mr. Potato Head toys and Christine read One Potato, Two Potato by Cynthia DeFelice and Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. Both books are available at the library for check-out!

Bonnie Flick, our snack coordinator for this summer, brought along baby carrots and finger sandwiches made with cheese and crushed potato chips. They were a big hit!

The Book Club members tested their skills on matching pictures of root vegetables and potato trivia, then tested their taste buds to see if they could properly identify 4 flavored chips: ketchup, sloppy joe, baby back ribs and hot sauce. 7 of the 13 Book Club members in attendance properly identified all 4!

We also had a vote to decide if Wavy or Flat should be the “Official” chip of the library. With a very narrow 1-vote win, Wavy took the prize! Vote Chip

The highlight of the afternoon was shooting off ‘potato rockets’ made with PVC pipe and wooden dowels. Thanks a million to BEN for cutting slices of potatoes for us to load up and shoot at a chalk-drawn target at the far end of the parking lot.  Two of the potato-pellets actually made it in the target. We discovered raw potatoes are rather bouncy!  This experiment wasn’t just for fun, however, but to demonstrate Boyle’s law in crazy-science terms.
