Goodbye ’12 & Kids: see the BUCKS!

As we work our way into the New Year, we look back on the past and anticipate what 2013 will bring.  Good fortune and Good Health are two we wish on all DPL patrons and area visitors!   Another New Year’s tradition is making resolutions to “do” something better or differently in the new year.

The library, of course, encourages patrons to read more this year.  While technology has provided us with lots of ways to entertain ourselves, there still is nothing like the joy of cracking a book open and immersing yourself in the words within.  Back before Christmas, a friend posted this cartoon on my Facebook page: If that doesn’t sum it all up, I guess nothing will.  Continue to use your library as much as you’re able.  Bring your kids, your grand kids, your neighbors and friends.  Libraries nowadays offer so much more than books, but books are at our core.

In 2013, DPL hopes to increase services to patrons in a variety of ways.  While I have plenty of ideas, I DO also want to hear the patrons’ ideas about what you’d like.  When you next stop in, fill out a little survey indicating what services you’d like or suggest for 2013!

To get area youth into the spirit of their New Year’s Resolutions to read more, we are participating in the Milwaukee Bucks’ Read to Achieve Campaign!  This program is open to all Wisconsin children in 3rd-10th grades. Beginning January 2nd and goes for 8 weeks.

Kids earn a point by reading pages in a book, magazine or newspaper.  When they’ve scored 500 points, they become an All-Star Reader and earn a voucher for a FREE ticket to a Bucks game in March (an adult must accompany them with a separately paid-for ticket, discount available) and will get a special tee shirt when they attend.   Readers who earn 750 points by February 27th will be entered into a drawing for an official Bucks autographed basketball, or can be chosen to sit courtside at a game in March and recognized at halftime of the game!

We have enough supplies for TWENTY-FIVE children to participate in this program.  Please don’t delay in signing up if your child wants to join!  We can’t take extras beyond the 25.  To sign up, email the library directly at desotopubliclibrary @  or call the library and leave a voice mail (608-648-3593).  If you leave a voice mail, please leave a phone number so I can call to confirm with you and let you know when to pick up your materials.

Also, I want to quickly thank Lynn David for pinch-hitting Thursday while I was ill.  It’s nice to know we have local patrons who can learn to ‘hold down the fort’ in an emergency!  She did all the weekly cleaning and had everything sparkling when I came in Saturday morning.  Thank you so much to Lynn!!

We hope to see you often in the New Year!
